![]() ![]() My second attempt went almost exactly the same as the first. I chalked all this up to the blade not being very sharp on arrival so I spent a few hours with a stone to try to get it to the point where I could cut the plastic. That being said I've been able to cut through similiar targets with a cheap but functional katana in one slice. The results are pictured below.Īs you can see the cuts were far from clean but I was able to get through a sapling with several hits to the same area. After trying the bottles I went to a target that seemed more in line with the size, shape and demeanor of the sword: some small trees. The bottles just bounced away with some dents (and the slightest punctures at the point of impact). The results were pretty disappointing but not surprising. My first targets were some fairly heavy duty plastic bottles full of water. Not surprisingly, given the shape of this sword, it does not come with a scabbard. It is just as soildly put together as the rest with no movement or looseness even after my cutting attempts on some pretty rough targets. The guard, again, is about as oddly shaped as the rest of the sword but very fitting. The pommel is as oddly shaped as the blade with a little ring (though it's too small to actually hook much on to). Pretty standard for leather like that but still a minor annoyance. In the below picture you can see how a few minutes of use with the leather grip led to it rubbing off in my hand. A wimpy handle and grip just wouldn't cut it here. It feels amazingly solid, probably in part due to the weight of the sword. The grip is real leather wrapped around the handle (doesn't come apart so I can't say anything about the actual construction but it feels too heavy and solid to be wood). This blade is supposed to look rough from the shape to the way the flames are cast/imprinted/ground (I have no idea how they got there but it looks rough) onto the blade to the way the rest is shaped, a little chip off the tip adds to the style of it as a whole whether it was intentional or not. My blade had what appeared to be a small chip off the tip but to be honest, I didn't mind at all. From the spikes on the spine, which I filed down just a tad after tearing a hole in my shirt with them, to the shape of the whole thing, it kind of looks like something out of a bad dream (but in a good way!). Almost everything about this sword is designed to be as imposing as possible. The shape of the blade is obviously designed more for form than for function. Near the guard the blade is about 1/4 of an inch thick. The blade is about as thick as I've ever seen. ![]() POB (point of balance): 6.5 inches from base of guard (just as the big curve starts)ĬOP: vibrations are for suckers (the steel is way too thick to vibrate in any noticable way) ![]() In this picture where I was holding the blade out with one arm to take the picture with the other I could only hold it at arms length for a few seconds before my arm started to sag under the weight.īlade length: 18 inches (14.5 on the big part of the cutting edge) Even for someone as big as myself (6'3", 250 lbs.) this sword is a challange to wield with any finesse. Weighing in at about 3.5 pounds this thing is hard to handle. The blade itself was packed in styrofoam with a plastic wrapping covered in some kind of oil.ĭry handling with this sword gave me a fairly accurate impression of what I would find later when I tried to cut with it. As seen in the pictures everything was in fine shape coming out of the box. Opening the box yielded their typical mound of brown packing paper to protect the boxes of the swords within the shipping box. This sword, despite being fairly cheap and a terrible cutter, is no exception.Īs usual with Kult of Athena my package showed up within a few days of placing my order and in good shape. Therefore, fantasy swords have a special place in my collection. ![]() What draws me to swords in general is the sense of another time and place than the one I'm sitting in. I found this sword while browsing and had to have it from the first time I laid eyes on it. KoA "Warblade" Review by Shawn "sharneee" Dubowyk - Syracuse, NY Hello SBG! I've been lurking around for quite some time but this is my first post I thought I would start off my SBG membership with a contribution, so here we go! ![]()
